Starting in 9th grade, I volunteered to tutor elementary schoolers in the Wheeler District for a few days every week. Each day, the kids would come running to me with their homework or something interesting that they had done in class that day and be eager to learn. In particular, there was always a group of kids that would be reading, drawing, and telling stories to each other. They would always enjoy it when I would draw with them or tell them funny things that I saw at school. These interactions gave me ideas for events at their STEAM and family bingo nights as well as ideas for how to make tutoring more creative and engaging for the students I helped one-on-one.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, volunteering became difficult, especially tutoring. However, I got the opportunity to become an officer for a club focused on virtually tutoring students from all around Cobb County. This opportunity allowed me to realize just how many students needed help, especially during this difficult time, and how easily I could reach them through Zoom.
Through my work as an officer for this club, I gained inspiration for my virtual summer writing camps. I wanted to spread my impact further than the students that I had worked with one-on-one every Sunday. I also saw that each student was more eager to learn if they got to write with and have fun with their peers. I will continue to volunteer and tutor these students throughout the rest of my high school career and beyond!
